The ORCA BTX-8 and BTX-21 are high-density VoIP media
gateways that provide interworking between a PacketCableTM
managed IP network and the public switched telephone network
(PSTN). The BTX-8 and BTX-21 enable cable telephony subscribers
to communicate with landline and mobile telephone subscribers
throughout the world. The BTX-8 and BTX-21 provide high levels
of scalability and reliability for cable VoIP. This scalability and
reliability enables cable network operators to efficiently build-out
and maintain their networks. |
Open, Reliable Communications Architecture
The ORCA product family consists of carrier-class VoIP infrastructure
products. Service providers throughout the world use ORCA
gateways and softswitches to deliver local, long distance and
enhanced telephone services.
Capacity
The BTX-8 supports up to 480 voice ports on 16 E1 or T1 interfaces. The BTX-21
supports up to 2,040 voice ports on 68 E1 or T1 interfaces.
Standards Compliance
The BTX-8 and BTX-21 comply with the PacketCable signaling protocol (TGCP),
codec, and security specifications. The BTX-8 and BTX-21 also comply with the
PacketCable Electronic Surveillance Specification to support the wire tapping
functionality described in the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement
Act (CALEA) specification.
Network and Softswitch Interoperability
The PacketCable TGCP ISUP event package supported by the BTX-8 and BTX-21
allows SS7 networks to control subscriber calls. To support E911 calls and
Operator Services, each BTX-8 and BTX-21 voice port supports MF tone
generation and detection. To support quality of service over the cable HFC
plant, the BTX-8 and BTX-21 interoperate with leading softswitches to support
the PacketCable Dynamic Quality of Service (DQoS) specification.
Operators may deploy multiple softswitches to achieve flexibility in terms of
scalability and geographic redundancy. To help achieve this flexibility, multiple
softswitches can control the resources of a single BTX-8 or BTX-21. Using the
TGCP protocol, up to eight softswitches can control the resources of a BTX-8
or BTX-21.
Voice Processing
The BTX-8 and BTX-21 support G.711 µ-law and α-law encoding. For home
office and small business services, the BTX-8 and BTX-21 automatically detect
fax and modem signals. In addition, the BTX-8 and BTX-21 provide dynamic
jitter buffers, adaptive echo cancellation, lost packet recovery, and Diffserv
packet prioritization to support high quality voice communications under the
most demanding IP network conditions.
Security
To prevent eavesdropping, theft of service, and malicious call disconnects, the
BTX-8 and BTX-21 support the PacketCable Security specification. The BTX-8 and
BTX-21 enables a secure network deployment through the use of IPsec, HMAC
and AES to authenticate and encrypt signaling and bearer traffic.
Reliability
Many features enable the BTX-8 and BTX-21 to deliver the high systemsavailability
required in regional data center and central office applications. The
BTX-8 and BTX-21 are NEBS certified. All common logic resources are 1+1
redundant and hot swappable. Power supplies and fans are redundant and hot
swappable. In addition, BTX-8 and BTX-21 capacity can be increased and
software can be upgraded without interrupting calls while the gateway is in service.
Management
Each BTX-8 and BTX-21 contains an integrated SNMP agent for monitoring and
control. The gateways support both SNMPv2c and v3. The NueraView element
management system and the Nuera Configurator tool provide graphical user
interfaces to simplify management processes.
